Malijah Jackson
Malijah Jackson is a sophomore at Jackson State University studying healthcare administration, and a graduate of Ballou Senior high school's hospitality and tourism class of 2025.
Helped Me Grow as a Leader and Professional
I was more than happy with this internship. I was met with new and exciting opportunities and the leadership skills I gained was undeniable. I am overjoyed at being chosen for this internship and how it has helped me grow as a leader and has a professional.
The highlight of my NEXTDC Internship was going to NAF Alumni Summit with Shamiyah. That event was really eye-opening and it allowed me to think about furthering my career in hospitality
I had an amazing time getting fully immersed and introduced to a company I did not know had so much to do with my high school career and technical education pathway and building my passion for hospitality. This summit and internship has influenced me so greatly, that I have decided to pursue a more hospitality role in my education!
Building My Skills and Professional Networks
NEXTDC has given me the opportunity to be a leader and mentor to students across the district while gaining exposure to guiding site visits, creating professional connections, exploring the realms of hospitality, and strengthening my professional skills. As a returning intern, the organization has continuously supported me throughout my professional journey and has influenced me to grow beyond what I am comfortable with.
A highlight in my experience was joining NEXTDC and Destination DC at their annual 4th of July celebration. I was able to reconnect with so many amazing professionals from across our industry that have seen my growth throughout my time as both a high school and college intern.
The July 4th celebration is an amazing opportunity to make your own connections to Washington, DC VIPs all while support NEXTDC programs for students.
Life as a Manger and Mentor
In June and July 2026, we helped manage NEXTDC's 12 high school Career Ready Interns. Having been interns ourselves with NEXTDC in high school, we knew how nervous and excited these interns would be. As managers and mentors, we helped our colleagues navigate building weekly presentations, interpersonal relationships, and over 20 site visits to local businesses. We were also able to network with industry professionals and develop our own skills. Check out some of our amazing experiences below!
