Career Ready Internships (CRI) is the marquee summer internship program for DC’s Career and Technical Education Academies. Over six weeks, 12 NEXTDC Career Ready Interns discovered more about what makes their hometown of Washington, DC so special. From networking with executives and founders to going behind the scenes of iconic institutions, interns expanded their worldview and discovered career possibilities across several industries.

After getting to know each other through ice breaker activities, interns got to know their new colleagues around the Destination DC offices, including Associate Creative Director, J'Nay Penn

No first week is complete without a welcome lunch! Hanane Nafidi and the team at Carmine's helped the interns settle into their summer of exploration and learning with pasta and a chat about the restaurant industry

Interns were challenged to a scavenger hunt to discover the treasures of the National Portrait Gallery and Smithsonian American Art Museum, including taking their own portraits

Week 2 - The NEXT 250 of Education

Going behind the scenes at the DC Public Library's central facility, interns learned about the history of the library and the many resources available to them as DC students - and they all got library cards!

From luxury accommodations to celebrity dining experiences overlooking the DC skyline, interns went behind the scenes of the Morrow hotel with Gio Reyes to see what makes this hotel so special.

DC Public Schools

Director Sherry Richardson explained to the interns what goes on behind the scenes to make their Career Academy learning possible and focused grouped with the interns how to make it better.

During a special Wordshop, interns explored spoken word poetry and how identity, history, tradition, and culture all show up in the ways we speak, write, and communicate.

Nothing says DC like cherry blossoms! Interns met with the NCBF's senior leaders to learn all about what it takes to plan and execute a major festival with thousands of visitors from around the world.

Visit National Harbor

A day out of the District! Interns toured Visit National Harbor to learn more about another destination marketing organization and even had the chance to take a ride up on the Captial Wheel!

Ben's Chili Bowl

As iconic as the cherry blossoms, interns were treated to a special sit down lunch with a true Washington treasure, Ms. Virginia Ali, co-founder of Ben's Chili Bowl.

DC is a theatre and music city! Interns explored three distinct venues, the Keegan Theatre, Studio Theatre and 9:30 Club/The Atlantis to discover more of DC's incredible artistic scene

Interns had the chance to sit down for intimate discussions with the founders of five incredible local businesses - Charlie Ross Magic, Bailiwick Clothing Company, Capital Candy Jar, Joe Shymanski Photography and Luxury of SPC Travel

Flipping the room upside down, interns learned from museum leadership about a different model of entrepreneurism - franchising - and how it can offer the similar challenges but different support structures.

From entrepreneur to fish empire, President Greg Casten took students behind the scenes of Profish's Ivy City processing facility to explain how a job in his uncle's restaurant lead to building a regional distribution company and restaurant group.

Entrepreneurship in a large organization? Interns learned how the skills of a founder can be used even in a large organization including pitching new ideas, owning projects, and thinking creatively to solve problems.
 

Week 5 - You are Your Greatest Asset

What do European kitchen appliances have to do with hospitality? EVERYTHING! Interns learned from BSH staff and two guest celebrity chefs about careers in culinary industry and the intersection of design and hospitality

Relationships are the most important factor in making a luxury hotel experience. Meredith Goldstein took the interns behind the scenes of DC's top hotel and explained the simple factors that make the hotel a one-of-a-kind destination

Director of Sales and Marketing Erich Hosbach explained the importance of always being yourself in any job - from fashion to accents and beyond - and what to do when being your true self might be challenged

Oana Leuhu-Aluas and Charlotte Fults from DC's Department of Energy & Environment explained the importance of the city's sustainability initiatives and how they could get involved and make a difference

Taco Bell regional leadership, including East Coast Field Marketing Leader Jason Dydo, spoke to our interns about upward mobility - how to set yourself apart and find yourself getting the best opportunities
